Mary Had a Little Lamb

Assignment AND Grading Rubric (same)
Lab Format
Chapter 11
Mary Had A Little Lamb

LT:  To identify the relationship between the volume of water in a crystal wine glass and the pitch it produces

This lab begins with the segment of the MacGyver episode titled "The Heist" where Mac breaks into the bad guy’s apartment and uses wine glasses to create the right pitch to open the sound-activated safe to liberate the diamonds.

Hypothesis: Conditional statement identifying what the students anticipate will happen to the pitch as water is added to each glass.

Scenario:
Students have been assigned to “break in” to a sound operated safe like
Macgyver.  The “combination” that will break the safe is the song “Mary had a
little Lamb”.

Working in teams of four (one player for each note), teams are given
    1.  Four  crystal wine glasses
    2.  A graduated cylinder
    3.  A water container

Hypothesis: Conditional statement identifying what the students anticipate will
happen to the pitch as water is added to each glass.

Using trial and error and Mac’s technique, students figure out the song, making sure to keep data on the volumes of water used.

An on-line keyboard is displayed on the screen to use through the process.

A graph is prepared showing relationship between pitch (note) and volume.

A complete analysis and conclusion are required.  The text should be used to develop a meaningful analysis.
